View Full Version : how to edit/break up .avi file?
so there is some avi file that is too large to fit into one disc..
anyone know how i can break it up?
and also maybe edit it?
change the codec, so the file size is smaller?
hope someone can help
thanks
What movie is that? It depends on what codec its using. Lets say if its using DivX and the BitRate is 800. Then why not, re-encode the whole movie with VirtualDub or Dr.Divx into something with lower BitRate?
Lower BitRate means you sacrifice on the quality. Get a BitRate calculator from www.doom9.org. Calculate the number you have to enter for BitRate if you want the whole movie to fit into a size of a 700Mb CDR.
Enter the movie time length and 700Mb capacity and it should calculate the BitRate for you.
oic...
i go try....
i think the codec is divx3
just downloaded the virtual dub
but dono how to use..
START VirtualDub
OPEN your avi file
Click FILE and then FILE INFORMATION - Here it'll tell you the codec used for video and audio.
Anyway, click on:
VIDEO
FULL PROCESSING MODE
VIDEO (yes, again)
COMPRESSION
Select your codec, usually I go for DivX 5.0.5 and if you wanna go for it too, make sure its installed on your computer. If dont have the codec, get K-Lite FULL Codec Pack from http://doa2.hosk.sk
Then click on CONFIGURE, from here, I hope you've calculated your BitRate with any BitRate Calculator. Enter the BitRate desired.
And for Variable BitRate Mode, I usually choose "multipass, 1st pass" - Dont ask me why, I've forgotten but video processed this way is better (read somewhere, forgot where).
Then you're done with VIDEO, select AUDIO. If from FILE INFORMATION earlier, your AUDIO is mp3 format, then just select DIRECT STREAM COPY.
After you click OK, select FILE, SAVE AVI and it'll start encoding. Good luck
thanks for pennywise provide such information because i also need it too ekke
thanks pennywise
anyway, what if it is already encoded with DIVX5.0.5 codec.?
can work also? if i only wan to change the frame rate can use this method?
anyway, the audio not stated is MP3... so what should i do..
If its encoded as DivX5.0.5 liow, then you reencode again the result filesize will be the same UNLESS you lower the BitRate. I dont think FrameRate affects file size though.
nemesic,
Sorry, never heard of that codec. I think DivX is the best right now. Even Xvid I dont like. Say files as AVI unless you're ripping from DVD then you save as OGM.
sorry pennywise is xvid
pennywise : really big THANKS!!
appreciate it
sorry pennywise is xvid
I hate this codec one... Its actually the same as Divx. (Try reading it backwards)... Not very compatible with some players. Like last time I downloaded a movie using Xvid, the movie jump jump jump one... Like TV rosak like that...
oh i see that why so many people hate it :p
pennywise :
can teach me how to set the bit rate?
pennywise :
help me.. i just do follow what u told... use about 2 hours..
then the result file is appear about 80MB (the calculater said suppose to be 700MB)
and the result cannot be opened..
what i done wrong?
Hah?! You got put the BitRate correctly or not???
Get any BitRate calculator. In the calculator, usually have 4 fields.
1 for Video BitRate
1 for Video Time Length
1 for Audio Bit Rate
1 for File Size
1. So, you enter 700Mb in "File Size"
2. Then you try playing your video with WMP9, see the length of the video and enter it (kepada minit yang terhampir, Eg: 2:15:38 means 2 hours 15 minutes and 38 seconds, put 2:16 as 2 hours and 16 minutes lor).
3. Then you put 128Kbit for "Audio BitRate"
4. The "Video BitRate" field should generate the desired BitRate for that file automatically.

what i done wrong?
The movie 2 hours plus to encode and its only 80Mb surely the movie will look like shit. Anyway, like I've said, if the audio = mp3, then leave it as it is (means use direct stream copy).
As for the video, open video - full processing mode. then video - compression. Select DivX 5.0.5 and configure your BitRate. If you follow the steps correctly, should be no problem mah.
pennywise :
yes.. i also feel strange... take so long time to process....
and finally cannot open
anyway, the original codec is already DIVX5.0.5
i just change the bit rate only..
as specified by the calculator....
dono why..
Ok, tell me your video time length and file size please...
Ok, tell me your video time length and file size please...
so from the information
the length is 1:54:59.40
so i assume it as 1:55 = 115minutes..
file size i want = 695MB (my CD is 702MB)
so enter this and other t hing in the calculator, it shows that i shuold use : 691.2kBit/sec
can tell me your calculator same or not plz..
thanks
When I entered 695Mb CDR, it gives me 697 BitRate but if I enter 700Mb CDR, it gives me 700 BitRate. THough it may vary a little but now you know your BitRate is roughly 690 - 700 lor.
Anyway, you input this and try to "Save AVI" with VirtualDub again. This should encode the movie but its impossible to come out at 80Mb unless halfway your movie got error and so the encoding process stops at 80Mb. Go try and watch it this time.
Takkan 80Mb = 2 hours. I think 2 hours = 700Mb liow.
yes... strange thing
u know when we encode, it will show the dettail?
when i start to encode,
the detail already shown : Projected file size = 80.7MB
strange..
but anyway now i know my calculator is function correct
maybe i need to download the movie again
Then you must've done something wrong somewhere. Cannot be cause when it show the details, there'll be two running numbers. Video Size and Audio Size. It should be quite big ler, cannot be 80Mb++ only.
pennywise :
can suggest me other program other then virtual dub?
You mean to do converting kah? Try Adobe Premiere 6.0
You wanna convert what format liow? AVI to AVI rite? Just wanna change the BitRate? Try Media Cleaner 5 or Premiere 6.
if cut the avi file?only can use virtual tub?
pennywise :
i JUST FOUND THE PROBELM!
seem like i forgot to set the resolution.. and frame rate...
now is ok liao..
THANKS!!
pennywise do u use nandub b4 some of them say nandub is better then virtual dub??
nemesic:
Define cut the avi file, tell me what you wanna do. Adobe Premiere Pro is out and it seems to me that its damn good but I doubt Premiere will be able to do as much as these freewares could.
Anyway, Nandub is a mod version of VirtualDub lar. I never tried Nandub before cause I dont usually encode my movies. I just know them cause I did them before some time ago. Nandub being better or not I wouldnt know.
sam1741,
Hehehehehehehe... Its good that you overcome your problem but usually we dont adjust those settings.
haha pennywise is split the avi to half not cut wrongly use the english word kekek
pennywise, some questions for ya
I am following your instructions step by step and now I am encoding an avi file. its real time dubbing. Is there a faster way to do this?
Let's say I got a 1000MB avi and I do not want to sacrify the quality. How can I split the file into 2 separated 500MB files?
According to your encoding method, we can lower down a high quality movie file and have it fit into a 700MB cd. What if we have a low quality movie and wanted to increase the video as well as visual quality? Is this possible?
Million thanks in advance.
if you don't want to sacrifice the quality you can try easy video splitter http://www.doeasier.org/splitter/ hope this will help! :D
