Optical definitely wins over ball mouse. But low-end optical mouse maybe not as good overall as a good ball mouse, but then gamers don't buy low-end optical mouse.

I prefer a mouse with good shape rather than high performance.

i have an idea ...
catch a big fat mouse ...
kill it ... strip its skin ...
disinfect the skin, air dry it and preserve with chem ...
then tailor it to cover up your good-ol-mouse ...
this way we have a very HIGH END real mouse ... hahahaha

Cloud7: Optical mouse good wor...like mine wireless optical, damn chun.

i think the point is not whether about optical or roller. it's about the DPI(dot per inch) of the mouse.

If you can get an optical mouse with 800dpi and above, it's very good for gaming already. Anything less than that is no good.

The Razor Boomslang of course have something like 1200dpi if I'm not wrong, but I think over sensitivity also not good.

Belive me a decent 800dpi mouse do the job just fine.

I have an optical trackball, very good for strategy games,... one simple advice for cost conscious kakis out there,..... buy the cheapest mouse, why?, all mouse will die out eventually, it hurts more for the expensive mouse to die, but easy to replace the cheap mouse.

Performance wise,.... I agree with good grip design, coz easier to response. On playing FPS games,.... go for optical, it makes a difference.

I only use Logitech mouse. I won't settle for anything less. Optical mouse best for anything...wins over ball mouse anytime.

BTW, what is optical track ball mouse? So far been using my logitech optical mouse for 2 years without a single problem. I have another microsoft optical blue mouse brand new un-open. Dunno when can use that as my logitech one refuse to die... :)

LOLZ,...... I can help your logitech optical mouse to die,.... no problem JK

Track ball is like a mouse placed upside down, instread of pushing the mouse around to move your cursor, you roll the ball with your finger, belive me, it gets really fast if you have a lot of scrolling to do.

If you can't imagine that, just look at your scrolling wheel, it allows only up and down movement, the trackball allows you to move the cursor 360 degrees

hmph i prefer mouse with "balls" rather than mouse with "infrared" heheh why?? i think roller mouse response faster compared to the optical one. and when i wanna drag over the sreen, roller mouse seems to be more sensitive to me...trackball???if u wanna break ur thumb ASAP..i can suggest u to use that..i think it is very uncomfortable and tiring..especially to the thumb

you do know what optical mouse have higher DPI and more accuraccy right? Perhaps you have used poor quality optical mouse but from my experience....balls mice will be phased out once optical mouse becomes affortable. The only 1 problem I know what optical mouse sucks is that it need a surface with 1 color. If you use the mouse on a surface with lots of color (eg, picture mouse pad), the accuraccy of optical mouse will be bad. This have to do with how optical mouse works. Besides this, there is not ONE reason why optical mouse is inferior to ball mouse.

As for trackball, this is actually quite good for browsing. It is actually the preferred choice among the laptop mice. Of the three type, I think the trackball mouse is most usable. The other 2 is just horrible especially the new type that is touch pad. Just that trackball is not fast enough for games.

Not too sure about a single color mouse pad but I find an optical mouse cannot work on a glass or reflective surface. I find the optical mouse works best on top of a newspaper.

Try the optical on a non reflective surface. Like a newspaper or on a piece of plywood. You will see the difference.

I still prefer the trackball. minimal space required hehehe

Roller mouse...have been using in early 90' until now baru revolution...change to optical...You have to maintain the roller mouse , to clean the dust n dirt after using for a period of time...it is a pain...lots of dust can reduce the efficiency...Using optical mouse now, very good coz no need to maintain the mouse... :)

it works best on those carpet type mouse pad that is single colored. Also works very well and accurate with special mouse pad with squarelines created specially for optical mouse.

Certainly not newspaper. And of course it won't work on refletive surface like a glass cause the glass will defract the light and cause inaccuraccy.

Hhmm...i'm not too sure about the 1 color thingy though...I used it on my wooden desk surface(no mousepad...to poor to buy mousepad!! ) and it works fine. What I understand it's optical mouse is like a mini-digicam and shooting away at frantic speed at the surface. It compares the current image and the previous image and determine the distance between these images and reflect this back to ur PC. So in fact, a single color pad isn't the best choice, base on this theory, but the opposite.

And never ever use glass or reflective surface coz the image taken will not be accurate and thus tak boleh jalan.

I use my thumb second and third finger to roll the ball,... like spinning the disc, and use the thumb and third finger to click, this is the fastest movement to scroll big maps
