A 10 year old boy, had eaten pineapple about 15 days back, and fell sick, from the day he had eaten. Later when he had his health check done... doctors diagnosed that he had AIDS. His parents couldn't believe it... Then the entire family under went a check-up... none of them suffered from Aids. So the doctors checked again with the boy if he had eaten out...The boy said "yes". He had pineapple that evening. Immediately a group from Malaya Hospital went to the pineapple vendor to check. They found the pineapple seller had a cut on his finger while cutting the pineapple, his blood had spread into the fruit. When they had his blood checked...the guy was suffering from AIDS..... but he himself was NOT aware. Unfortunately the boy is suffering from it now. Please take care while you eat on the road side.

Yeah, I doubt about the message too. My question is, can HIV virus totally destroy our immune system just within 15 days ?

Theorically if you are living in bacteria free, virus free environment and you have HIV infected your body you should can live more than 100 years old provided you live in moderate life.

The only evolution mutated genes (cancer) might be the only cause killing you slowly but it is a good sign for human evolution because we must evolve become better and better.

hm... is possible that within 15days, the boy get a fever or so, so HIV virus - Aids.. jus i'm not sure how long HIV virus can stay in open air/ liquid environment of room temperature... (the pineapple).

but when one of the WOW Day (a community service name) theme is to bring HIV infected children to SUnway Lagoon, my friend tried to organize (it's always old folks & orphange so we tought of this kids needs to have some fun too), is not approved, later change venue to dusun buah buahan, also not approved... jus so pity and breaks my heart big time , the society c them as resident evil virus. end up we donate 3 inflatable swimming pools to the centre.

I knoe that AIDS spread thru bodily fluids via sexual intercourse or sharing needles but do emergency workers are at risk? what if somebody was exposed to the blood of an AIDS patient? would touching the blood automatically infect you with the virus?

SPOTLIGHT ON

Women with HIV: 'My Husband Infected me with HIV'

Mony Pen is the Project Manager at the Positive Women's Network, also known as the Cambodian Community of Women living with HIV/AIDS. She found out she was HIV positive when her husband fell ill just two years into their marriage. UNIFEM Singapore interviews her in this issue:

Q1. How did you get HIV?

I would like to start by saying that the HIV situation in Cambodia reflects my personal story. In Cambodia, it is very common for the majority of women living with HIV to have contracted the virus from their husbands. I contracted HIV from my husband in, perhaps, 2002.

Q2. What were your first thoughts upon finding out you were HIV positive?

I felt mad, hopeless, and kept thinking that I was going to die soon but I never blamed nor got angry with my husband. In our society, people believed that it's our Karma (sin) we did something bad, so we deserved it. I thought their perception was wrong. We were innocent, and we didn't do thing wrong except that we did not have information about HIV. I talked to my husband peacefully and asked him to stay positive in our life journey together in order to respond to AIDS, in particular, to publicly advocate for people living with HIV.

Q3. What is the hardest thing about being HIV positive in Cambodia?

The hardest thing about being HIV positive in Cambodia, and also around the world is the stigma and discrimination. This is a huge disaster which kills us even before the virus does. This leads to unemployment, being kicked out of our own homes, and lack of access to proper treatment.

Currently, the situation arround stigma in Cambodia has improved slightly. However, I can still say that people living with HIV are still not able to obtain jobs. Our involvement at various level especially at decision-making levels is merely token, and we've yet on take on greater and meaningful roles which demand for more attention from the government and donors agencies.

Q4. Is HIV infection among women a serious problem in Cambodia?

Personally, I would say yes because many women are jobless, we have lower education, low opportunity, no income, and face double stigma and discrimination, for instance, dealing with gender inequality and at the same time with HIV.

Q5. Tell us more about the Positive Women's Network and how you got involved?

I was employed by the Cambodian Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS (CCW), the network which is run by and for women living with HIV in February 2007 as project manager in charge of "Strengthening HIV positive women's leadership in Cambodia ".

CCW is a national network of women living with HIV/AIDS (WLHA) in <?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = ST1 /><ST1:COUNTRY-REGION w:st="on"><ST1:PLACE w:st="on">Cambodia</ST1:PLACE></ST1:COUNTRY-REGION> representing the voice of positive women. Since its inception in July 2004, as part of the Cambodian People Living with HIV/AIDS Network (CPN+), CCW was known as the Positive Women’s Sector (PWS), and then <TT>officially changed its name to the Cambodia Community of Women Living with HIV/AIDS in December 2006</TT>. The initiatives of forming the PWS were from the GIPA team, in collaboration with some of the women’s self support groups and CPN+ secretariat, which was then approved by UNV, UNAIDS, UNDP, and UNIFEM for joint funding. The main objectives of CCW are to empower WLHA, improve quality of life, reduce stigma and discrimination against WLHA, assist creating better prevention, care, treatment, and other support services for WLHA and facilitate its referral systems. CCW is directly linked with the women representatives of the Provincial People Living with HIV/AIDS Network (PPN+) established in 12 provinces and 16 Self Help Groups in <ST1:CITY w:st="on"><ST1:PLACE w:st="on">Phnom Penh</ST1:PLACE></ST1:CITY>. It is through these representatives that the CCW reaches out to women and self-help groups in the provinces.<?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O /><O:P></O:P>

Q6. What are the activities of the Positive Women's Network?

1. Strengthening HIV Positive Women's Leadership in Cambodia: under this activities we provide capacity building training to members, so they're able to spell-out for their demands.

2. Income-generation activities: the Modern Dress Sewing Factory.

3. Anti-retroviral therapy (ART) treatment literacy and education, for instance, treatment prepardness, and drug side-effect management.

4. Advocacy for greater and meaningful involvment of HIV women at both local and national level.

Q7. How can someone support the Positive Women's Network?

Everyone can support the Positive Women's Network in many ways. For instance, with our income-generation activity, they can order products from us. Secondly, they can also create an enviornment where positive women have the chance to be heard. For donors they can support our activities directly, and the government can listen to and promote more involvement of women at the national level.

Thanks Mony! We wish you all the best.

u will NOT know that you are a HIV positive until 21 days to 6 months later....

you need to take the first test called ELISA...if that postive then another test called western blot test..then if still positive, then you confirm that you are a HIV carrier....

for more info go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HIV_test

i been receiving this email many times and i found it is not true.

HIV virus cannot live outside our body for more than mili seconds...so once the infected blood is out and its being expose to the air or sunlight, then the virus is being killed

*i know this because HIV Awareness is a COMPULSARY online training that we MUST take and there will be a test for it....

and i get 100% for this test !!!... :D :D

Nowaday Elisa test is very sensitive....The window period is 13weeks in US and 12weeks in UK (mostly worldwide). If u feel that u was involved in a risky activity, go and test it after 12 weeks. Dont waste your money to test it within 12 weeks. Most of the test can be done in Clinic and hospital.

It's abnormal for the kid infected by this way. Unless the kid has serious mouth sore/bleeding AND the pineapple seller's blood is still fresh AND the kids eaten the pineapple after being cut(in very short time). It's low risk if compare with unprotected intercourse and sharing needles.

Our skin is very good protection from HIV. Unless your skin is cut and bleeding.
Yes, not only emergency workers are at risk but doctor and nurse also. SOP is a must when the job can contact with blood or fluids. They must protect their eyes, nose, mouth and so on.

It should be quite impossible. Despite HIV being a gene altering virus, it will not last long once exposed to air. so there is no immediate danger if you touch HIV infected blood unless you yourself have wounds..EG: Your mouth has deep ulcers etc. I have serious doubts about the story of the boy .Fastest window tesing result is about 3 months nowadays. So 10 days window is not VERY possible.

i think drinking HIV blood will not get infected unless my mouth or digest system also has a cut where the virus can get in, besides that HIV does not get spread thru open environment like what most has said.

however, there is always some 'miracles' in this world, if you are meant to get it, may be you will just get it by laying your fingers on your keyboards now .... while some never gets even if they sleep with different partners every night in bangkok ....
