Most GSM modems operate on an AT command set specific to GSM devices (with vendor extensions, of course). That would be a place for you to start :).

You might also get lucky and find a used Wavecom modem on BuySell like I did - I think RM182 for a WM02A is a steal! Getting them new is extremely expensive...

Are there a generic library where I can just call up the functions or library? If so, it is avaiable for free?
Well...i am in need to develop the module within two weeks and the true is, I know nothing about it. Kinda of sad i can say.

If you use Windows, check out ActiveXperts' SMS (http://www.activxperts.com/activsms/) . It's not free though...There's a 30-day trial. I think the license costs US$150 for 10 seats (minimum order).

Visualtron (http://www.visualtron.com) also has some programs that might interest you. They also have a free version of one of their programs, VisualGSM Lite (it's not a library though...).

If you use Linux there are a few programs you can use, like SMSLink (http://smslink.sourceforge.net).

Think of a GSM modem as a GSM mobile phone, without the screen, keypad, speaker and microphone. It's usually used for remote telemetry applications (status reporting for off-site equipment, position tracking for vehicles, etc.) and more commonly these days, for use by mobile operators and service providers in SMS gateways, contests, advertisements, etc.

I have been asking around what kind of modem/terminals available. All I can say that the price is a bit expensive liow...

basically I think only those (like me) involve in developing mobile solutions will need it coz it is expensive.

If you want to save some money, try looking around for an older data-capable phone, either through IR or through a serial cable. Many of these phones would work well too - at a much lower cost :).

lucky it is my boss that wanted to develop this thing...cost to them is like nothing....I just take care of developing the interface and software.

anyway, he is going to get for me the modem. he said he knows someone who can get it cheap wow....so i just sit here..surf net while waiting for him...

I duno how much they cost, but the main difference is the number of SMSes you can send or receive in a certain time.
But I can assure you it ain't cheap.... think thousands per month and you're about right...
